Ski Resorts
Powering Perfect Days on the Mountain
Ski resorts operate with a demanding energy profile, from the massive power spikes of morning lift startups and snowmaking to the constant need for reliable power in base areas. NOMAD offers a rapidly deployable, utility-scale solution to manage these challenges, helping resorts reduce high operational costs, ensure guest safety, and increase operational resilience.
The Challenge: The Energy Demands of the Mountain
Ski resorts face a unique combination of energy challenges:
- High Demand Charges: Large power spikes from snowmaking systems and chairlifts starting simultaneously lead to extremely high demand charges that drive up operational costs.
- Guest Safety & Experience: Consistent grid power is essential for the safe operation of chairlifts. An outage can lead to dangerous and lengthy evacuations.
- Operational Resilience: Power is critical for all aspects of the guest experience, from ticketing and lodges to restaurants and retail.
The NOMAD Solution: Lower Costs and Guaranteed Uptime
NOMAD units are integrated into the resort's power system to perform two critical functions:
- Peak Shaving: The system charges from the grid during low-cost, off-peak hours. When the resort's energy demand spikes, the NOMAD unit discharges cheaper, stored power, flattening the demand curve and directly slashing the highest charges on utility bills.
- Uninterruptible Backup Power: The NOMAD unit acts as an instantaneous backup power source. In the event of a grid failure, it seamlessly takes over the load, ensuring critical assets like chairlifts have the power needed for a safe evacuation and essential base area services stay online.
